This page has specific information about the details of the Physics Research Experience for Teachers at Brigham Young University. General information about the program can be found using the General Information link in the Teachers category to the left.
Applications can be submitted by filling out the form which can be accessed in the Applying link under Teachers to the left. Please also have your principal or assistant principal send us an email, fax, or paper letter of recommendation. We will notify you of acceptance within a week of receiving your application. Slots will be filled with qualified applications on a first come, first served basis so it is to your advantage to apply early.
The program runs the same length of time as the REU program, from June 6 through August 12, 2016. Although we recognize that some teachers might have scheduling problems due to their district's academic schedule, it has been our observation that teachers have the best experience if they can participate in the program for the full ten weeks. However, we can be flexible with start or end times if necessary to accommodate individual circumstances, provided that the modified schedule works for your selected Research Advisor as well.
Travel costs for participants coming from outside the State of Utah are covered for participants in the program. If participants choose to drive rather than fly, they will be reimbursed for equivalent round-trip airfare.
To the extent that our budget permits, participants will be compensated at the same rate that they get for teaching the same length of time during the academic year. In some cases, we may not be able to quite meet the pay rate for highly-compensated teachers depending on the number of other RET participants.
In addition to a stipend, out-of-the-area RET participants will receive an allowance to cover the cost of room and board while participating in the program. The allowance is sufficient to cover the costs of the participants only. If a participant chooses to bring a spouse or other family members with them, they will need to cover the extra cost themselves.
Participants will be involved in a research project agreed upon with their faculty advisor and the REU/RET program administrator. The student links include example projects available in various areas of study.
Eligible participants may receive BYU graduate credit for their participation in this program. The cost of tuition and fees is covered as part of the grant.
We are anxious for participating teachers to be able to apply their summer research experiences in their classrooms when they return. One way we will help you integrate your summer experience in your instruction is to provide you with appropriate laboratory equipment you can bring back with you to use in the classroom. The equipment will be chosen by the participating teacher in consultation with their faculty advisor and the REU/RET administrator.
