RET Program Information

This page has specific information about the details of the Physics Research Experience for Teachers at Brigham Young University. General information about the program can be found using the General Information link in the Teachers category to the left.

Applications

Applications can be submitted by filling out the form which can be accessed by clicking on the "Applying" link under "Teachers". Please also have your principal or assistant principal send us a letter of recommendation by email, fax, or mail. We will notify you of acceptance within a week after the application deadline, which is February 13, 2017.

Period of Program

The program runs the same length of time as the REU program, from June 12, 2017-August 18, 2017. Although we recognize that some teachers might have scheduling conflicts due to their districts' academic schedule, it has been our observation that teachers have the best experience if they can participate in the program for the full ten weeks. However, we can be flexible with start or end times if necessary to accommodate individual circumstances, provided that the modified schedule works for your selected Research Advisor as well.

Travel

Travel costs for participants coming from out of the area or out of state are covered for participants in the program. If participants choose to drive rather than fly, they can be reimbursed for their travel up to the amount of equivalent round-trip airfare.

Stipends and Housing

To the extent that our budget permits, all RET participants will be compensated at the same rate that they get for teaching for a 10-week period during the academic year. In some cases, we may not be able to quite meet the pay rate for highly-compensated teachers depending on the number of other RET participants.

In addition to a stipend, out-of-the-area RET participants will receive a $1,000 stipend to go towards the cost of room and board while participating in the program. The allowance is meant to help with the costs of the participants only. If a participant chooses to bring a spouse or other family members with them, they will need to cover the extra cost themselves.

Research Projects

Participants will be involved in a research project agreed upon with their faculty advisor and the REU/RET program administrator. For project descriptions, click the "Projects" link under "Information".

Continuing Education Credits

Eligible participants can also receive BYU graduate credit for their participation in this program. The cost of tuition and fees is covered as part of the grant.

Laboratory Equipment Grant

We are anxious for participating teachers to be able to apply their summer research experiences in their classrooms when they return. One way we will help you integrate your summer experience in your instruction is to provide you with appropriate laboratory equipment you can use in your classroom. The equipment will be chosen by you in consultation with your faculty advisor and the REU/RET administrator.
